On August 16th, 1971, Welcome Wagon service was reactivated in Mobile after an absence of about 10 years. Six hostesses made calls upon new residents of the city, and it was decided that a Welcome Wagon Club should be organized under the existing By-Laws of Welcome Wagon Clubs International.
Mrs, Martha Rou was designated to start a club, and Mrs. Tuckie MacDonald served a first president. Installation of officers was held January 5, 1972, under the name New Mobilians Welcome Wagon until 1979 when the club voted not to be an associate of Welcome Wagon and proceeded with the name New Mobilians Club until the present. New Mobilians opens the way for residents to meet each other, become a part of a group, and find their place in the community they now call home.
The club has many interest groups in which members are invited to participate. There are also a number of events scheduled throughout the year which involve spouses and guests. One of our social events of the Club is the Mardi Gras Ball/Gala which began in 1984.
Each year different charities are the recipients of club donations. Indeed, New Mobilians is recognized as a important part of the Mobile community.
